Ellen and William Craft who executed an ingenious escape from slavery. The couple purchased a top hat, cravat, jacket, tartan, and a tassel and dressed Ellen as a man. She posed as William’s wealthy, male slave master. Under their new aliases and with forged documents, the two traveled 750 miles, undetected. Ellen rode first class by train, and even dined with their steamboat captain during their journey. They arrived to their freedom in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Christmas day of 1848.
